You may now safely remove hardware

So exactly two years and four days ago I broke my ankle.  Two years and three days ago I had two pins put in said ankle to expidite the healing process.  My jerk of a surgeon said he wanted me to keep them in for a lifetime.  I got a second opinion, and he said I should have them removed because they’re longer than they need to be, limit my flexibility, and hurt.  All the time.  Last year, I had an appointment to have them removed.  Last September, I lost my health insurance with my job and my ability to finish the surgery.  This summer, I worked an awful job long enough to get health insurance and quit in a way that let me get COBRA.  And in eleven hours, those foreign objects are coming out for good!  Finally!

  1. At least you did not have to join the armed services to get that health insurance like one man I read about. Good luck with the surgery – it’s been a long time coming!

  2. Good luck with the pin removal process! Yay for getting the uncomfortable metal out of there!

  3. Oh … too bad. You won’t get to keep your pimp walk. Just kidding, I know how that goes, sort of. I’m glad you will not need a note in the airport anymore. I hope it’s a low pain procedure.

They’re not big enough to set off alarms, which is yet another reason I want them removed.

  4. I wish you the best of luck getting those removed and huzzah for COBRA!

  5. Mazel Tov!

  6. Congratulations!

  7. Yay! I know how long you’ve been waiting to get those out!

    Congrats and good luck!

  9. Yay!

I have two screws in my toe from bunion surgery last February. My foot still hurts. I wonder . . .

I, too, was told they’d stay in forever, but the thought of them there bothers me.

  10. Yay for you! I hope the surgery goes well.

I can’t believe it was only two years–it seems like forever ago. Congratulations on working the system.

  12. as someone who originally took a job solely for healthcare benefits, i feel your pain. hopefully getting the hardware out will be less traumatic! all the best; i hope your ankle is good as new. :)

  14. I can’t believe that was two years ago already. I mean, I’m sure it feels like a lifetime to you, but man, time FLIES. So glad you got those suckers out!
