And Now For Something Completely Different…

Day Three: still true. I’m a little politiced out, so how about a story from my life instead?  Do you know where I was last night?

sheep!

No, I did not come to Jesus. Let me give you another hint:

Down in front!

That’s right! It’s the Rockettes! On a balmy night in early November, I celebrated Christmas by attending the final dress rehearsal of the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular.  A few days ago, Birmingham (remember that character?) called me out of the blue to invite me because he got free tickets through work. So we trained it down to the city (we also got to ride the train for free because we bumped into his brother-in-law who works for the railroad!) and did some touristy things like watching the skaters at Rockefeller Center (they already took the ice map of America away), eating a hot pretzel, and paying $3 to get cash from an ATM.

NYC makes me smile like a corny mo-fo

As cheesy as the entire production was, I have to say there is something timeless, if not culturally relevant, about dozens of pretty girls doing high kicks in unison while smiling their brains off.

Good times.  I just can’t fight the early Christmas Spirit!  I guess this means I should throw my Halloween pumpkin away today.

  1. You can’t really get upset about paying $3 for cash from an ATM when the rest of the evening was virtually free, right?

Of course we remember Birmingham. :)

They’re doing a Rockettes Christmas show at our new arena here, and it’s almost tempting. Almost. ;)

I love how kinetic that photo feels. Glad you had fun!

    I like that last pic!

  5. “Day three: still true.” Sigh. Every time I hear “President-elect Obama” on the radio, it makes me smile.

I am not ready for Christmas, but it’s snowing today, so I suppose it’s inevitable.

  6. love it! love NY too!!
I’d love to see the Rockettes!!

  7. I can’t believe Christmas is almost here again already.

Radio City and The Rockettes – it’s just one of those things you have to see at least once in your life (sometimes more than once) if you can. Timeless tradition.

Glad you have good memories of the ocassion.

  8. I’ve never seen the big christmas show and have always felt like I was missing something.

  9. Oh, to live in New York! How fun!

  10. I am so looking forward to seeing this show! I will make sure that woman whose rather large head is blocking your shot, is no where near me.

  11. No, don’t give in to the Christmas Spirit, Christmas Tree! I haven’t even watched A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving yet!

  12. My wife would really like to go to NY and see a show. I would love to take her. That looks fun.

    Knot

  13. Oh my gosh, you can’t get more Christmas then that = ) Glad you had fun!

  14. Oddly, my first guess upon seeing that first picture was that you’d gone to Palmyra in western NY for some crazy celebration of the Angel Moroni.

Because that’s what I would do if I lived anywhere in NY.

  15. i keep going to new york in the summer. rockettes sound like a lot of fun.

  16. Cool! I’ve always wanted to see the Rockettes.

That’s great! I love iconic timeless events that usher in the holidays for you. I think for me it’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. Or just perusing the Christmas decorations in Target.

  18. The first picture had me singing “Jesus Christ … Superstar!”

I’ve never seen the Rockettes in NYC, but they ship a whole company of second-tier Rockettes to perform at the Grand Ole’ Opry house in Nashville for Christmas every year, so I have seen them there. Cheesy, yes, but the toy soldier act is fantastic.

  19. That photo is awesome. I’d love some brisk weather to hit LA so it can feel at least like the seasons are trying to change. I’m still amazed that it’s less than three weeks til Thanksgiving. My mind’s been on school deadlines (and politics, obvioulsy) more than it has been on holidays.

That last picture is fab, by the way! I love how nancypearlwannabe described it as ‘kinesthetic’. It really is.

I’ve never seen the rockettes but I imagine it’s be a blast. I love the feel of NY during the holiday season. Living in Philly I plan on taking the train up sometime before Christmas to check out all the window displays and eat a pretzel of course :)

  21. Come to Jesus?!!! Sure just lift my hopes and dash them to all heck and back… *sigh*

BIG GRIN HERE NOELLE! You know I love ya.

I would LOVE to do what you did. To see THAT show in THAT place? You are lucky! My children did get to see the Rockettes in Nashville and had a blast.

You know what though? This is the first time in YEARS that I am not looking forward to Christmas. I have no idea what is up. Keep your fingers crossed for me because as the Momma around here, I am the one that makes the holidays happen for my kids. Hubby is NOT a festive type.

  22. The picture is really good too by the way. It carries energy with it!

  23. NYC makes me smile like a corny mo-fo too, but I try not to do it in front of the tourists. ;)
