The Daily Tannenbaum

Wet, Tired, Chlorinated

March 18, 2008 · 27 Comments

Did you know that the weekend after next I’ll be competing in my very first swim meet?  It’s going to be something of an adventure since my ankle is still healing and I’m just barely in shape.  (Especially after last night’s pasta, a dangerous exception to “no cheese March.”)  To get ready, I’ve been swimming every day of the week.  On Monday, Wednesday and Fridays I swim with the team, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I go in to practice my starts and turns.  I do the twice weekly remedial swimming is because I can’t yet dive into the water without my goggles flying off my face, and if you’ve ever swam 4 laps with goggles full of water, or around your neck, you know that it is unpleasant, at the very least.  At those practices, I keep diving in until I do one where my goggles (which are prescription, by the way) stay on and I can see all the band-aids and random pieces of string on the pool floor while doing my laps.  Good times!

Since it takes about 15 tries or so to do a successful dive, I’ve also been late to work every day in March.  But don’t worry, I’ve been making up for it by leaving earlier working harder.  The only days I haven’t gotten up at 5:30 and gone swimming have been the days I’ve had to leave the house at 5:45 to make it to Massachusetts for work, which I’ll be doing again tomorrow.  Even this past Saturday I had to get up early to make it to a funeral in Long Island, so I only had one precious day to sleep in, and that was Sunday.  And for reasons that even I can’t fully comprehend, I set my alarm for 5:30 that morning anyway.  I got up, fed the cat, ate some breakfast, realized that the radio station I listen to doesn’t even have programming that early on a Sunday morning, and went back to bed by 6:00.  And then I slept in.

So here’s where the fun comes in.  Can you guess how long I slept in?  Keeping in mind that I’ve been getting up at 5:30 every morning and going to bed at 10:00 every night this month, so with those 7.5 hours per night, I wasn’t on much of a sleep deficit.  However, you might want to factor in that I was still recovering from the evil effects of DST, and that I had just made my bed with a clean pair of sheets, and it was Super Comfy.  So in your comments, if you care to hazard a guess, I’ve actually got a prize for the person who comes the closest.   If you gues exactly, I’ll include something extra special.  And to prove that I’m not cheating, the secret clue is “wand.”  (That will all make sense tomorrow.)  Enjoy, and get some sleep!

I’m going with 8:45. I’m guessing this because hubby and I typically get up at 5:30 during the week and 6:00 on the weekends and HE slept in until 8:45 last Saturday. We rarely sleep in.

I think you slept until 11:06am.

I’m going with 12:01pm, since that’s when I got up on Sunday. Only because someone called me. Ouch.

    High noon.

No idea what “wand” could mean, but I’m guessing 12:30.

As someone who has sat through and participated in many a swim meet, let me tell you: They are boring. And long. Bring a book.

Go you! Good luck at the swim meet :)

  • nancypearlwannabe // March 18, 2008 at 11:39 am

I did indeed know you have a swim meet coming up!

Why are there random pieces of string on the bottom of the pool? That kind of grosses me out.

  • nancypearlwannabe // March 18, 2008 at 11:55 am

Err, oh yes. A guess. I was distracted by bandaids in the pool. I’m going to say 1 p.m.

There is a Flaming Lips song called W.A.N.D. but I don’t really see how that would relate to your snuggly Sunday morning. I’ll go with 10:45AM.

No cheese March?? I’m about to hitchhike my way to Hudson Valley and slap some sense into you…

  • andrea // March 18, 2008 at 1:00 pm

11:30! I can’t do the turns right. They always end up crooked. AND NO CHEESE! OH MY DOG THAT I NOT RIGHT! I’m with Ben…You. Must. Have. Cheese.

  • Vicious Headbutt // March 18, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Good luck at the swim meet!

My guess is that you slept in until 2:17 PM.

  • apollocreed // March 18, 2008 at 1:13 pm

    6:30.

and no cheese is just wrong man.

  • Brando // March 18, 2008 at 1:41 pm

    I will guess 10:20.

I actually managed a noon wake up when DST kicked in. I haven’t done that sober in years.

If we text-message WAND, we get 9263. So I guess 92:63. PM of course.

    Hmmm. I suck.

    How about lucky 12:32?

  • stefanie // March 18, 2008 at 2:18 pm

I was going to guess 12:30, but I see someone else already did that. And then I was going to pull a Price is Right and guess 12:31, but now Deb just came in with 12:32. So I’m going to take the long shot no-way guess and say 2:07. Even though I don’t think there’s any way you slept in that late. (I probably could, given the right circumstances, but I don’t think you could.)

And it’s funny you said “they’re prescription, by the way,” because as I was reading the line just before that, I was thinking, “I wonder if she wears contacts in the pool or if she’s just blind like me when she swims.” So thanks for filling me in. :-)

  • lizgwiz // March 18, 2008 at 2:33 pm

    12:47.

For no particular reason. That just sounds really late to me.

  • Allie // March 18, 2008 at 3:11 pm

    I’ll say 11:45.

It’s awesome that you’ve stuck with swimming even with your ankle stuff. It must be great for the healing process.

Band-aids in the pool always freak me out. There’s always at least one.

  • kir // March 18, 2008 at 3:12 pm

I want to say 2:15 - and will this work like the Price is Right?

  • erikka // March 18, 2008 at 5:01 pm

i tried to search your site for wand and came up with some weird posts, but none really sleep related…perhaps I missed something though.

    i guess 7:10am.

  • elizabeth // March 18, 2008 at 7:03 pm

I’ll say 1:11…..I’m sure you can figure out how I came up with that “lucky” number.

  • mike golch // March 18, 2008 at 8:51 pm

DUDE,no cheese???what’s up with that? all sillyness aside, good luck with you swim meet.

  • Laurel // March 18, 2008 at 9:09 pm

7:45! Because whenever I desperately want to sleep in, I fail and wake up early. And, apparently, I think you’re just like me.

  • Aaron // March 18, 2008 at 11:26 pm

Hey, congrats on the swim meet, Christmas Tree! Kick some aquatic ass!

I still don’t see what Harry Potter or his wand have to do with your sleeping in, but I’m just going to guess 9:00. Because you don’t strike me as a late sleeper.

Oh, no, wait, was it seven o’clock? Because Book 7? Damn.

    Seven is my final answer.

  • mermu // March 19, 2008 at 10:52 am

I’m going to be the Price is Right Skank that just bids oversomeone…she usually wins so here’s hopin’.

    11:46

  • The Modern Gal // March 19, 2008 at 11:02 am

    One dollar!

7:16. I really have no basis for that guess, other than I’m guessing you’re being sarcastic when you say “sleeping in.” I’ve read Deathly Hallows and I have no idea what that and wand has to do with a time.

6:59 am Good luck at the swim meet!
