I weep for the future

March 18, 2008 · 23 Comments

Every day, I see signs that the world is deeply in the shitter. (Pardon my French.) There’s global warming, an unprovoked war that has killed thousands of people, a dollar that is barely worth the paper it’s printed on… My liberal little heart could go on and on. However, I’m also an audaciously hopeful person (Go Obama Go!) so I’ve assumed that these problems can be solved. I know my history, America’s future has looked dire in the past, but we always bounded back. However, I saw something at the mall today that shook me to the core, and made me think that maybe there is nothing to look forward to.

That’s right. Dippin Dots, the ice cream of the future, has gone under. The ice cream that was brought to us via time travel has disappeared, which means that either The Terminator killed John Connor, Bill & Ted didn’t make it on their excellent adventure, Marty McFly got fired after all, or the Lost Island experienced some kind of melt down. They say you can’t change the future, so what deviance has made it so that the good shoppers of the Galleria can’t get futuristic freeze dried pellets of ice cream? It’s a sad day.

In other news, I have to clarify some questions about the Sunday sleep in challenge. The contest is Price is Right style, so if you go over, you’re out. There is one person so far who is dangerously close to the exact time. I’ll be in Massachusetts (and internetless) all day Wednesday, and I’ll see if I can get the answer to post automatically. Good luck!

Here’s one more clue:

Wait, you slept until Deathly Hallows-o-clock?

I have the strangest feeling I might have effed up our time line. I’ve been doing a lot of Lost-inspired “science” in my unemployment.* Let me see if I can fix this.

    Harry Potter? I’m out.

That’s a real bummer about the future. I hope it wasn’t something I’m going to do. If so, I apologize. In advance.

What? No more Dippin Dots? Sadness. They made my tongue feel funny but tasted good.

That Harry Potter clue does nothing fo rme, so I’m sticking with my original vote. 12:30.

Geez. What’s next, no more astronaut ice cream? What is the world coming to?

What? Dippin’ Dots is a staple of zoos, fairs, carnivals, amusement parks, etc. How can they go out of business? However, come to think of it, I’ve never actually partaken in the future. I guess I was part of their demise.

Noelle, that clue is dead to me.

But if it’s all we have, I say 3:17. Three for the number of Deathly Hallows, 17 because that’s the important birthday.

    3:17. Final answer.

I blame the death of Dippin’ Dots on Horselover Fat.

The clue didn’t help me…I don’t know a thing about Harry Potter. I’ll stay with my previous guess.

I never did like dippin’ dots. I don’t think I’ll miss them.

  • apollocreed // March 19, 2008 at 10:41 am

nice. and I always though dippin dots sucked.

My sister and I were just discusing dipping dots the other day; they are the ice cream of the future, but they are here in the present. But they were also around when I was young, which makes them the ice cream of the past as well. And now I find out they are going out of business . . . it’s too confusing. A regular time quake of sorts . . .

why god why?! i feel i am so close to deciphering these clues, but close only counts in horseshoes and with hand grenades. drat! foiled again.

I’m sticking with my 7:10 am.

I don’t think I’ve ever had Dippin Dots. I did watch a special about it on the Food Network. It was almost like trying them. :)

  • Laurel // March 19, 2008 at 11:53 am

No more Dippin Dots? It IS a sad day.

  • Sarah // March 19, 2008 at 12:57 pm

No Dippin Dots? That’s it. There’s no point in going to baseball games anymore.

  • andrea // March 19, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Thank god. Dippin’ Dots are nasty.

And I totally agree (bad war, bad environment, bad moneh), like my good liberal mom says: the world is going to hell in a hand basket.

The first (and possibly only) time I had Dippin’ Dots, I remember thinking, “If this is the ice cream of the future, I don’t want the future to ever come.” Seriously, replacing real ice cream with Dippin’ Dots would be an unforgivable tragedy. Sort of like how on the Jetsons, they ate their food in pill form rather than as food. I ask you, what is the point??

  • suzanna // March 19, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Dippin’ Dots?! What a travesty. Not that I ever ate them, but it was always comforting to see them sitting there and wonder, “How do they survive with no customers?”

  • rdl // March 20, 2008 at 5:38 pm

I always thought those dots were overpriced. as long as there’s still a friendly’s or auntie anns.

  • rdl // March 20, 2008 at 5:42 pm

I got so excited about ice cream that i almost forgot- ‘Go Obama Go!!”. I’m sure you’ve seen his wonderful speech by now(if not i have it up at my place) - wasn’t it great!

I liked your diatribe on how we have wronged our future, the Marty McFly part was my fave.

  • omar // June 15, 2008 at 11:26 pm
