The Daily Tannenbaum

Ned? Ned Ryerson?

February 1, 2008 · 20 Comments

Dude, tomorrow is Groundhog day. How crazy is that? It’s one of those days you don’t think about for 364 days, and then you listen to a morning radio show, and it’s like, “oh yeah, break out the groundhog!” My big problem with this “holiday” is that it unnaturally teases you into thinking that winter’s almost over when it hasn’t even really begun. Even if spring starts six weeks from now, it’s still not going to be bikini season. Then there are these other signs of spring, like pitchers and catchers going back to training in a week, and my grocery store trying to sell me packages of seeds, and tickets going on sale for Mountain Jam. BTW, I really, really want to go to Mountain Jam and camp out there. But I currently I am without resources for camping. And despite my yearning to commit to a relationship, I feel uneasy about committing to a concert that is five months away. I may just fall back to enjoying the sounds of Government Mule, The Felice Brothers and Michael Franti on the radio.

Quick fact about this winter: This was the first January since 1935 that the Hudson Valley received no measurable snow. Depending on weather you’re a pessimist or just a person who sees the glass half-empty, that means we really are eff’d with climate change, or we’re due for a really big snowstorm this month.

On an unrelated note, I want to say that I’ve been vindicated: Starbucks is getting rid of sandwiches. I guess the important people over there read The Daily Tannenbaum.  Maybe the price of salt rose so much that they could no longer afford to make their food-esqe monstrosities.  Either way, this is a win for capitalism and foodies everywhere.

BTW, I thought last night’s Lost was good enough to get me hooked again.  That means I need to spend the next seven Thursdays bumming a spot on a friend’s couch.  (Thanks for last night, Dutchess, my allergies are now almost all gone…)

If you end up going to Mountain Jam, be sure to check out Grace Potter & the Nocturnals! That’s one crazy chick and her band making some great music! And Yay another Lost fan! It should be a great (mini) season.

I love the stuff I’ve heard from Grace Potter. She’s one of the big draws for me.

I am so super excited that you are hooked again. It was such a downer last season when you just didn’t care anymore, almost felt like you just didn’t care about ME anymore…

Alas, I too want to go to Mountain Jam. I’ll camp with you if you’d like. Let’s get everyone involved, it’ll be a good time!

Don’t take it so personally. It also had a lot to do with needing to get up early for swimming the next day.

Okay, so much, so much- your post title in my RSS made me yell “GROUNDHOG DAY!” and remember that I heart Bill Murray.

Thank goodness Starbucks is getting rid of the sandwiches. Because, eww.

Why is it not bikini weather yet?! I meant, not that I have ever or would ever wear one, but still. I need the beach!

I spent exactly zero days at the beach last year. It was sad.

Oh, and LOST! I loved it, except I was tricked into thinking it was two hours of NEW Lost and it was that stupid recap show.

Yeah, they get you every time. And WTF with the Oceanic stuff so that you had to watch the next show? Lame.

Any time I hear “I Got You Babe” on the radio, I think of that movie. I’ve got it on DVD somewhere, I should dig it out for this weekend.

I have only heard of one band playing Mountain Jam. I’m sadly out of it when it comes to music.

I wouldn’t know any of those bands but for the radio station I listen to.

I love that movie! And it has Andie MacDowell in perhaps her finest performance! She and I go way back, as you know.

I say thank god (or the smoke monster) for that recap show. I needed it. Isn’t Lost great because, despite however long it’s been on, we still have NO FREAKIN’ CLUE what the heck is going on? What other show could go several seasons without even letting on what is happening, and yet we still watch?

I stopped watching Lost last year because of the way it dicked with my emotions.

Yeah, I needed the recap too. I turned it on and was pissed that it was just a recap show, but then I couldn’t stop watching because I’d forgotten everything. The actual episode was great. Jacob freaks me out. Almost as bad as Ethan did (being Tom Cruise’s cousin makes him extra scary). I’m a wuss.

We’re getting hit with major ice today. I wish it were spring.

FYI, screen shots show that Jacob = Christian Shepherd. Is your mind blown???

I didn’t get home last night until 8:45, so I missed almost all of Lost. (It’s on from 8 to 9 here.) But the last 15 minutes were intriguing. I have no idea what the heck is going on.

I always forget about Groundhogs Day because my dad’s birthday is today, and I am too busy trying to come up with a present for him. If you have any ideas for a good dad present, let me know because I still haven’t bought him anything.

It might just be because of my job, but the best dad gifts are books. If he likes Stephen King, he’s got a new one called “Duma Key.” If he’s into non-fiction, there’s a new biography of Thomas Hardy that looks good. Or Liz’s recommendation of “The Worst Hard Time.” Or just a booksense gift certificate, which can be used in most independent bookstores in the country and online.

Yeah, I’m totally re-hooked on Lost too. I was really grateful for that recap show. But … I’ll miss Charlie. Fare the well, good hobbit.

Also, thanks for the reminder that I need to watch Groundhog Day sometime this weekend.

I hope that we will get to see some more of hot Charlie. Apparently there are hairdressers in heaven, or wherever he went.

Awwww…I love Groundhog Day. The movie, that is. The day itself–meh.

I gave up on Lost after the first season, when I realized they were NEVER going to give us any answers. Only more questions. They are dead to me now. ;)

Such a great movie. It really made it hard for me to watch Heroes and think of Ned Ryerson as anyone other than an insurance salesman. I’m proud of you giving up on Lost. I tried and failed.

Holy crap! That does blow my mind!

    I know. Dude.

  • Erikka // February 1, 2008 at 12:25 pm

I threw the idea of camping out and going to this thing to my beau. If we went…and you wouldn’t feel like a weirdo or a third wheel…you could totally go with us. My beau’s family is from the Syracuse area…is that anywhere near there?

I think it’s all in the connected upstate area. But after post-writing, it looks like we may have a little group to go together after all!

Wow, there’s some amazing bands playing at Mountain Jam. I think an old friend of mine is playing there with Levon Helm. Go, N, go! Because some day you may be stuck in a place that makes Hudson Valley look like a hotbed of cultural activity, or at least within driving distance of said hotbed.

The Hudson Valley is like a wack-a-mole of cultural activity. A gallery opening here, an indie movie there. But a hotbed? Not quite concentrated enough.

I thought about watching Lost when everyone was raving about it in its first season. Then I heard it got all crazy and frustrating and absurd and I was just glad I never got sucked in. I did that with Twin Peaks, and once was enough.

That said, if you lived near me, I would totally let you come and hijack my couch once a week. That is, until The Office finally returns. Then all bets are off.

You might not remember me, but I sure as heckfire remember you! Ding!

I have been quoting that snow statistic left and right. Crazy snowless winter!

As much as I like you, Noelle, I LOVED those Starbucks turkey bacon breakfast sandwiches, especially after a long run on Saturday, and I rue the day they leave the stores. (They were still in my local store this morning!)

  • supersobe // February 3, 2008 at 9:34 am

LOST rules. Dunkin Donuts still has sandwiches. You know why they call it Starbucks? starBUCKS.

  • Aaron // February 3, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Dude, here in NH we had a snow record that had stood since the 1800s. Consider yourself very, very lucky, Christmas Tree.

Also, and I could be wrong, I get the impression that now that they know exactly how many episodes they have left on Lost, they can just start cranking along and giving some answers. Or at least not stretching out the season openers where the entire first episode is about Jack, the second one is about where on the island Locke is, etc. Plus, how much do I love the flash forwards?

  • Aaron // February 3, 2008 at 6:01 pm

That should have said “a snow record fall“. Goddamn me.

  • Sarah // February 4, 2008 at 1:32 pm

I was thrilled when Ned Ryerson showed up on Heroes this season.

Oh yeah– I heard about the Starbucks sandwiches this weekend and had a vague recollection of some blogger talking about how crappy they were :-)
