Soldier of Fortune, Open Your Cookie

September 6, 2007 · 12 Comments

I just got back from Boston. I had to leave at Five to the Thirty in the AM to get there in time. Somehow that was much more horrible than when I do it to go swim. I don’t know why, because I got to have waffles with me on the drive. At least I had a moment to stop and take a picture of the sunrise on my car:

Saturn Sunrise

The trip was good, but it made me sad to be there and not stay, and be on my A-game as we visited with accounts. My boss is an okay guy, so I think he appreciated it when I showed him my fortune from the cookie I got after our lunch at the Chinese place in Arlington:
Getting a raise

Yes, I realize that says I’m getting a raise on April Fool’s Day, and that means it’s not for real, but I asked my boss if I could hold him to it. He laughed. I think that means I’m getting a raise in April!

On a related note, what is the deal with fortune cookies getting saucier and more interesting lately? They are no longer full of bad grammar and funny 95% of the time if you add “in bed” to the end. I mean, how would it be funny if my boss gave me a raise in bed?
Ohhhh….
The other side of fortune was much more depressing:
Single Girl

Way to rub it in, strip of paper stuck into a stale cookie.

Ok, for reals. Arlington is .01 miles from my house. At least now you know how to get there.

Shoot, I probably drove right by you. I’m so going back ASAP.

I had a fortune the other day that said, “I’m finally out of that cookie!” Seriously, when did they start being funny?!

Around the same time you started telling the rest of us what’s in your fortunes. I remember when you used to try and keep them secret or else “they wouldn’t come true.” That was so annoying to me as a kid, you bratty little sister!

Why “still single” and not just “single”? That is harsh!

Yeah, it’s like, “Did that boy propose to Noelle yet?” “No, she’s STILL single.”

I haven’t seen the onset of these new, improved fortune cookies. Maybe I need to go out for Chinese soon and get myself a raise. Or a husband. Hee.

First the Chinese food, then the odd fortune, then the raise, then the husband. In that order.

I’ve noticed fortunes seem more like generic proverbs lately. There is one place in Minneapolis, though, that has amusing things in their fortune cookies, like “That wasn’t chicken.”

I’ve seen the “Learn Chinese” tidbits on the reverse side, too, but never that one! Sheesh. I’m with -R-; that was harsh.

“That wasn’t chicken” is always true for me, the vegetarian, but if you see that after a plate of General Tso’s and then don’t see any cats around, be very afraid.

I’m not sure I would have made the April Fools association…My first thought was “April 1st? Wow, that’s random.”

It was pretty much at the moment that I showed it to my boss that I realized it was supposed to be a joke.

That sunrise is gorgeous - but wow.. I obviously need to get out and have some more Chinese food. I could use some good fortune. :)

I wonder if the wacky fortunes have made it down under yet.

jeeze… that cookie was harsh. way harsh.

I know, it’s like, who are you to tell me?

I think the back of that fortune is actually my mom….what a strange thing.

Possibly mine too. Maybe they got together and planned it.

Love the sunrise and the fortune thing is funny. And the personal comment thing is cool. Like your new digs.

Thanks! I wish I had more to personally comment here…

I’m with nancypearlwannabe. You were so close! And Wagamamas MUST have been calling your name. You so do need to come back so we can all meet up. For shizle.

The fortune cookie cracked me up although you’re right. Now-a-days I read it outloud and say “in bed’ and then everyone just kind of shrugs and moves on.

The wagamama was calling me so hard… Especially since we went to a plain old Asian restaurant instead of one with communal tables and noodles! I’m planning on going back, really I am.
